  61. Hmmm... But some copy-programms copy a normaly Amiga-Formated disk without
  62. problems. So, why should it not be possible to do it??

  65. read track by track, that would be enough to build up a AmigaFS

  98.    TOS is up to 2.06 and 3.06 in the MegaSTE and TT respectively.
  99. TOS 1.4 (also know as Rainbow TOS) is the most recent version that will
  100. plug directly into your old 520 and is quite an improvement over TOS 1.0
  101. (Though 'improvement' is relative for most).  The visible changes include:
  102.  -  New file selector
  103.  -  Move files and folders with <Control> key
  104.  -  Skip a file during copy
  105.  -  Abort group copy, move and delete operations
  106.  -  MS-DOS Compatible Floppy Disk formatting
  107.  -  New copy disk<->disk utility
  108.  -  Can change folder name
  109.  -  Warm boot and Cold boot resets via key commands
  110.  -  can install Auto-Boot application
  111.  -  Install Application works correctly (You can reinstall applications)
  112.  
  113. Non Visible Changes include
  114.  -  Much faster disk operation (hard disk too)
  115.  -  the built in cache works (use cacheXXX.prg)
  116.  -  essentially removed the 40 Folder bug (includes removed malloc bug)
  117.  -  BIOS-devicedrivers now work through pointers behind the system variables
  118.  -  The Clipboard routines work
  119. .. + many other bugs fixed
  120.  
  121. TOS 1.4 is sold at a retail price of $99 but can be found as low as $60
  122. (you can install them yourself or have them installed.)
  123.  
  124. There may be *many* used sets of TOS 1.4 after the following:
  125.  
  126.    CodeHead Software recently announced the TEC, a TOS Extension Card
  127. developed by the german company Artifex, that allows you to plug TOS
  128. 2.06 into 520, 1040, and Mega STs. (Tos 2.06 will plug directly into
  129. STEs).  It's said to be compatible with any existing upgrades like
  130. ram boards, 16mhz boards, etc.
  131.    TOS 2.06 is a *very* large improvement over TOS 1.4 even.  The most
  132. visible change is a new desktop, which contains features not much
  133. unlike NeoDesk's plus a few more, yet it is all in ROM.
  134.  
  135. Some of the features of the TOS 2.06 desktop (from press release):
  136.  o Programs, files, and folders can be placed directly on the desktop and
  137.    started with a double click.
  138.  o Up to 20 programs or documents can be assigned to the ST's function
  139.    keys and started with a single keypress.
  140.  o Data files can be "dragged" and dropped on program files, which starts
  141.    the program and automatically loads the document!  Some programs even
  142.    support multiple document files in this manner.
  143.  o Each file on your disk can have its own unique icon, or you can use a
  144.    common icon type for each type of file.  New icons can be created and
  145.    added to the system.
  146.  o Keyboard commands for almost everything!  And not only can you control
  147.    the new desktop with the keyboard (as well as the mouse), you can also
  148.    redefine any of the key commands to suit your own tastes!
  149.  o A powerful file search function, that lets you find and select files
  150.    that match your specified criteria.
  151.  o Window management is considerably enhanced; scrolling has been sped
  152.    up, and selected files can remain selected even if you scroll the
  153.    window to a different area of the file list.
  154.  o Up to seven desktop windows can be open at once, and you can open
  155.    directory windows with simple key presses -- even change a window to
  156.    show a different drive without closing and reopening it.
  157.  o The "View" menu now has an "unsorted" option, for showing the actual
  158.    order of files and folders in a directory.
  159.  o Any character in the "upper half" of the ST's font can be typed in by
  160.    holding the Alternate key and typing its ASCII number on the numeric
  161.    keypad.
  162.  o Many of the special functions of the desktop (like copying, renaming,
  163.    etc.) can now operate in "batch mode", to let you quickly rename or
  164.    show info for a group of selected files, for example.
  165.  o The bootup sequence now includes a graphic display of the Atari Fuji
  166.    logo, and a memory test, and a configurable bootup delay that allows
  167.    hard drives time to power up.  It's also possible to bypass the AUTO
  168.    folder entirely by holding Control during bootup.
  169.  o Internal changes in the TOS program code result in very noticeable
  170.    performance improvements in many areas.
  171.  o ...and of course, lots more.  This list barely shows the tip of the
  172.    iceberg, in fact.
  173.  
  174.    The card is 2.5 by 2.5 inches and would require some soldering of
  175. jumpers and such to be installed in your 520 because the new TOS is
  176. located at a different address.  They also have a nosolder version for
  177. Megas and one for ST's with a socketed 68000.
  178.    The TEC with TOS 2.06 and a disk of utilities costs $139 direct
  179. from CodeHead.  I think the no solder version is $155.  I think they
  180. just started shipping it two days ago.  And I don't doubt that they
  181. will sell every single one they can get their hands on.  Apparently,
  182. they've already taken advance orders well above the total number of
  183. any single piece of software they've sold so far. CodeHead can be
  184. reached at (213) 386-5735.

  186.    Supposedly one could install a switch between TOS 1.4 and TOS 2.06
  187. for compatibility with programs that won't run under the new TOS.  You
  188. would also likely find some of your old software wouldn't work under
  189. TOS 1.4 but not much.  Most if not all new software runs under, or
  190. sometimes requires at least TOS 1.4 (and I would assume would work
  191. with TOS 2.06 as well.)
  192.    I would recommend at least an upgrade to TOS 1.4 just so that you
  193. are compatible with most new commercial and non-commercial software
  194. coming out.  I would guess that you will be able to find very good
  195. deals on used TOS 1.4 chips in the next few weeks.
  196.    You might try a ram upgrade while you are at it or even a processor
  197. accelerator if you have the money.  I started with an original 520 ST
  198. with TOS on disk!  It works great with 2.5 meg and TOS 1.4 now (and
  199. maybe TOS 2.06 soon :).  I would guess that 4meg TOS 1.4 520 STs are
  200. not too uncommon.  If you go for the ram upgrade, get one that uses
  201. simms. (seems the way to go)
  202.  
  203.   On another note, is the TOS 1.4 and 2.06 feature list in the monthly
  204. FAQL?  If not it probably should be.

  222. I have put a file called p_worlds.txt on atari.archive.umich.edu.  This
  223. file lists out a bunch of the world names in Populous (they are the same
  224. names for the Promised Lands data disk, although the worlds themselves are of
  225. course different).  If you find any errors in the file, or have any world
  226. names that are not in there, please update it.

  245. While I like the Extensible Control Panel, I have noticed that it
  246. seems to lose its functionality whenever I run an application.  Of the
  247. applications I have used where I can access it (Uniterm and Word Up),
  248. they all seem to disable most of the CPX's.  I have a Mega 1 STe, and
  249. I have not added CPX's to the control panel, nor have I changed the
  250. minimum number of slots in the setup menu.  But when I run Uniterm,
  251. for example, and I access it, all the CPX's seem to be there.  When I
  252. double click on one of them, like General Setup, the disk whirs, and
  253. then nothing happens.  When I reload the CPX's, I notice that only two
  254. or three are actually accessible.  The problem is even worse when I
  255. run Word Up (only the Configure CPX's option is available).  What
  256. causes this, and how can I correct it if possible?  Do I need to make
  257. the CPX's memory-resident?

  290. As far as I know, the latest version 3.6 of GFA-BASIC claims to be fully
  291. TT compatible. Perhaps anybody should try to compile the UUCICO Basic
  292. source with this version, it could only get better...

  294. But I'm afraid that this is not the only problem. UUCICO uses e.g.
  295. LINE-A routines that should be replaced for the TT.

  321. Chris you are not wrong there. Here in NZ a Mega STe will cost over $nzd3500
  322. while a 50mhz 386 with 128k cache mother board will cost you about $nzd700
  323. or $nzd2500 complete with 40meg hard disk VGA and software like windows or
  324. OS/2 etc .. But I STill love my Mega (grin) and its pcspeed.

  339.      I'm playing the Imageworks game Cadaver and I am stuck on the
  340. second level. I only have about 15% explored but every door is either
  341. locked, or there are bars blocking my path. I can get as far as the
  342. kitchen, but when I enter the corridor leading off it the door locks
  343. behind me, and all the other doors leading off it are locked, and bar
  344. block the far end. Can anyone give me some hints on how to complete this
  345. level?

  453. I have been reading (Znet) about a 68030 upgrade called SST by David Small.
  454. Sounds good, but can it be installed in a 520ST from 1985? Or does one need
  455. a Mega ST, or a 1040ST, or one of the newer ( >1988 ) machines like STE or up?

  457. My 520ST has had a one meg Memory upgrade, so there's also less space inside.

  490.   From what I've read on GENIE, the SST will not fit in anything but a
  491. Mega.  IF you don't mind putting your ST in an AT case, then the SST
  492. is electrically compatible with the old STs.  AS of yesterday, the SSTs
  493. were not shipping...

  536.   I have started to appreciate using Unix Windows on my ST when connected to
  537. Sun Sparcs. Unfourtunately I haven't been able to get kermit downloading to
  538. function correctly. Since that seems to be the only thing that might work,
  539. since it is the only protocol supported by the UW implementation I have and
  540. text capture won't work correctly I would like to know if someone has got this
  541. thing working. I suspect that it might be some simple configuration problem
  542. on the sparc side of the kermit thingy.

  631.         After being out of the country for several months I've recently
  632. set up my computer again, gotten hooked up to the Atari16 digests, and so
  633. on. Everything works as before except my Z-modem downloads. I use XYZ.TTP
  634. with XYZSHELL.PRG, which has always worked well with RZ.EXE and SZ.EXE on
  635. our university VAX system. However, every download I've tried ends in a
  636. "CRC error" message. The instructions indicate that this is likely a line
  637. noise problem; but I can up- and download over these lines with KERMIT, and
  638. the ZMODEM uploads work fine too. I can certainly live with KERMIT, but
  639. ZMODEM has been a bit faster...
  640.  
  641.         Afer a lot of fiddling with the XYZSHELL settings, all to no
  642. avail, it's time to ask for help. Anybody have any suggestions?
